This course discusses examples of research in the performing arts which have been produced using various disciplinary approaches, in order to compare and contrast the research methods used. Students will study and discuss the various needs of quantitative and qualitative study through process such as: random, group or individual data collection and recording; observation and participation; data recording and writing; emphasis on the analytical system chosen. Students will discuss the validity of various sources of information (oral, primary, secondary, archaeological/artefacts, and other textual sources) as empirical data, which can be used to build a scholarly framework as well as uphold research ethics. Students will be required to write essays, record data, or form hypotheses using chosen scholarly writing samples.

This course is aimed at preparing students to focus on any one of the following project specialisation – ethnographic/pedagogical research or dance production. Students will prepare and present project proposals under the supervision of appointed supervisors. Once proposals have been approved by a panel of lecturers, students will pursue a detailed study in research or choreography. At the end of the course, students will either produce a written research paper or stage production and write a performance project paper.
