ROD7001 - Research Methodology in Visual Arts

(3 credits)

This course focuses on qualitative research methods used in visual art. Candidates will study various methods of data collection such as interviews, archival research and observation. Candidates will learn to set objectives, define the scope and limitations of their research and plan their research design. Methods of interpretation and application of theoretical frameworks will also be discussed. The course will also train candidates to evaluate relevant literature critically and identify the gaps in existing literature on a topic of their choice. Subsequently, candidates will be able to produce a potential proposal for a thesis.

ROD7002 - Visual Arts Theory

(3 credits)

This course will study selected visual arts theories and the different methods we can employ to interpret a piece of artwork. Candidates will practice writing with theory and employ theory effectively to produce a line of questioning in their research that is focused and thorough. Finally, candidates will explore different ways of framing their thesis or essay through the use of theory.
