Programme Code: KRSRVAFTCV02

Our PhD programme offers students the opportunity to conduct independent research under the supervision of one or more teaching staff in the fields of music, dance, drama/theatre, as well as art and visual culture studies. Students also have the option of having a co-supervisor from different faculties within the university or from other universities.

Supervisors are responsible for guiding students’ research. This includes planning, developing and shaping their theses. They might even propose additional training options, and provide you with contacts and connections to their national and global networks of cultural organisations. Our teaching staff is also committed to develop your professional skills and experience as well as guide you in your post-PhD career either in the professional world or in academia.

We therefore strongly encourage prospective students to contact one of our teaching staffs to explore supervisory arrangements before you apply to our PhD programme. Not doing so early on in your research candidature may result in a less than satisfactory supervision arrangement, where students might not benefit from the full range of experiences as a PhD candidate in our programme. In addition, an applicant stands a stronger chance of being accepted into our PhD programme if they have secured an agreement from our teaching staff to supervise their research thesis.

In our PhD programme, students will be required to learn relevant research skills including the use of bibliographic and other databases as well as complementary computer skills that can contribute to their research. Strong emphasis is given to acquiring the necessary language skills in order to conduct archival or ethnographic research. We are also open to students interested in undertaking practice research in artistic creation, curatorial practice, cultural mapping, heritage project and digital humanities project.
