The Master of Dance is the first full coursework postgraduate programme in Malaysia. It offers a strong foundation is dance while presenting exciting and imaginative ways of thinking about and practising dance through historical and ethnographic research, critical writing, movement analysis, and performing arts theory. This programme also encapsulates pedagogy and creative production as means to advance inquiry in dance studies. Through our praxis and theory-based coursework, which culminates in a research project, students will gain a Master-level professional development in dance (research, performance, choreography or pedagogy), informed by scholarly research and writing.
Our programme places a strong emphasis on dance as a performing arts. Experienced and emerging professionals develop their vision and hone their skills as scholars, performing artists and teachers. Students create, interpret and present works, and they study the aesthetics of contemporary practice in a multicultural context. The aim of this programme is to produce graduates who are equipped with dance knowledge that is transferable to real life situations in the dance/arts industry.

This programme offers 43 credits, and the course duration is three (3) semesters minimum and eight (8) semesters maximum. Candidates will take eight (8) core courses, which include seven (7) modules for them to gain a foundation of knowledge of advanced dance research, theories and practices. Candidates are also required to complete a research project module in one of the following three tracks: research, performance, choreography or pedagogy. The research project consists of a written project paper of 15,000-20,000 words under the guidance of an appointed supervisor from the Dance Department. They will also select two elective modules that lead to one of those three tracks.
